Android Messages is the new Google Messenger

So, I just found this news when I tried to look for a new text messaging app in Play Store and saw Android Messages. Apparently, this change happened around 2 months ago.

Google's text messaging app Google Messenger is now renamed into Android Messages to introduce their next-generation text messaging protocol called RCS.

Through collaboration with many US carriers, the RCS (Rich Communications Service) protocol is meant to replace the SMS (Short Messaging Service) protocol, and by that, the new protocol will support not only text but richer media content in a text message just like an internet-based chat app.
